Before we get into the many benefits of Green tea, and why it’s one of my favorite beverage, let’s make one thing clear: while green tea is the considered the best weight loss tea for many reasons (convenience, price, etc), most teas (and even coffee) have weight loss benefits to a degree. In fact, as you’ll see below, Matcha tea is even better than Green tea for weight loss (but can be more expensive and requires more work).
Health Benefits of Green Tea
- Green tea is less processed than many other teas and therefore contains the highest concentration of antioxidants called polyphenols. These antioxidants help fight against the damaging affects of “free radicals” in your body, including slowing the aging process, as well as fighting against Cancer, Heart Disease, and many other diseases.
- Green tea helps improve brain function as well as physical performance without giving you jitters or resulting in a crash later. Furthermore, green tea can simultaneously speed up your metabolism and fat burning, especially in the abdominal area.
How to Prepare Green Tea for Weight Loss
There is a misconception that steeping your tea for longer will result in a greater caffeine output. The reality is the exact opposite – when steeping tea, the caffeine comes out of the leaves first and you only need to steep for 6 minutes to get the maximum weight loss benefits from your green tea. In fact, steeping green tea for longer can release a compound called thearubigins, which binds to the caffeine in the tea and can prevent the caffeine from giving you a boost.
For best results, bring the water to a boil and then set it aside and let it cool down a bit before pouring it over the tea leaves. Boiling the tea can actually destroy the healthy chemicals in green tea.
If you’re drinking green tea to help you with your weight loss goals, then it’s important that you don’t use any additives with your green tea – such as milk, syrup, sugar, etc. Green tea on its own has virtually zero calories, however, using sweeteners or even a little bit of milk can easily add hundreds of calories over multiple cups of green tea per day.
How Much Green Tea to Drink for Weight Loss
The amount of green tea you should drink to help with weight loss will depend first and foremost on the amount of caffeine and EGCG (another active ingredient in green tea that helps weight loss) in your brand of tea. Studies have shown that drinking between 6-8 cups of green tea per day can have a noticeable impact on weight loss in as little as one month.
Comparison: Green Tea vs. Matcha Tea for Weight Loss
The difference between green tea and Matcha is that with Matcha, you consume the entire tea leaf. This means that you get 100% of the healthy nutrients from the tea leaf.
Take a look at the charts below for a nutritional comparison of green tea vs. Matcha.
Green Tea vs. Green Tea Extract for Weight Loss
For some people, drinking 6-8 cups of green tea per day can be too much. If you are one of these people, you can safely take a green tea extract supplement to get the same weight loss benefits of green tea, without having to drink so much of it. Green tea extract supplements are completely safe to take and they can also make it easy for you to monitor your caffeine and EGCG intake more accurately.
